Ten Little Rubber Ducks Inspired Craft

We thoroughly enjoyed the latest Very Hungry Caterpillar show. It was filled with fantastic colorful puppets retelling the amazing Eric Carle stories including Brown Bear & The Ten Little Rubber Ducks. We were so very inspired that we created our own rubber duck dioramas based on the story. This book follows the adventures of little rubber ducks who are lost at sea.

Materials:

  • Ten Little Rubber Ducks book
  • old shoe box covers
  • felt
  • pencils
  • crayons
  • miniature rubber ducks
  • markers
  • duck tape
  • string
  • googly eyes
  • scissors
  • popsicle sticks
  • foam stars
  • glue
  • tree branches or leaves

Pick the scene that you would like to recreate from the story and make a color copy of the page. Use a pencil and paper to draw the figures you need for your scene (mother duck, moon, baby ducks, octopus).

Cut out the figure and use it to trace the shape on a piece of felt. Color and decorate the shoe box lid, use pieces of the blue duct tape to create water. Glue the felt characters on the shoe box top adding the googly eyes, foam stars and tree branches.

Glue the miniature rubber duck on the diorama. Use the popsicle sticks to attach the color copy of the scene to the top of the box cover.

For the scene, we used different shades of blue duct tape to create the water and used string pieces to create the tentacles of the octopus.
