My boys are SUPER active and I often need them to relax and be still which is usually a pretty hard task. We were gifted the book The Dolphin’s Secret: A Meditational Journey for Children by Meryl Best Lowell and it has been a great tool to get them to be still and be open to meditation.

This how-to storybook introduces children of all ages (geared toward children ages 4-8) to mindfulness techniques to help ease anxiety and promote happiness.

We have started using the book for guided meditation time where the boys get a yoga mat, a blanket and make themselves comfortable while I read aloud.

The book reads as a whimsical story of a mermaid and her dolphin friend, Aloha, while incorporating a sequence of mindful techniques that encourages children to find their sense of calm. This book can be a great resource for parents and teachers to help guide children to be more in touch with their own feelings and find their personal peace by utilizing the steps outlines in the story.

The excerpt below is a fun exercise that children and parents can do together:

“Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, and pretend you are blowing bubbles under the water, just like a dolphin. Keep taking slow, deep breaths in through your nose, and blow out through your mouth very, very slowly. With each breath in, fill yourself with joy. Each time you breathe out, relax just a little more. Imagine bubbles of all sizes floating around you.”

It is wonderful to have a book that helps children at an early age learn to relax. Hopefully they will carry this into teenage and adult years!
